Eternals Review
McAllen, Texas- On Nov. 5, the Marvel Cinematic Universe released its 26th movie titled, “Eternals,” directed by Chloe Zhao. The movie is part of the fourth cinematic Marvel phase that includes “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” “Eternals” casts A-list actors such as Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek and others. It follows the life of immortal beings called Eternals who were sent to Earth to defend it against evil deviants.
It is no secret that Marvel movies tend to be phenomenal works of cinematic art, and this particular movie was no exception. With the opening scene delving into the history and purpose of the Eternals, the movie progressed into showing pivotal points of humanity’s history. Throughout the movie, Zhao made it a point to show viewers the beauty of the world’s history. For example, one scene beautifully recreated the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which were one of the Seven Wonders of ancient times. “Eternals” also highlights a reality of humanity in which humans struggle between the best and worst parts of themselves. From greed, war and anger to innovation, laughter and love.
Moreover, Marvel movies are known for their use of Computer Generated Imagery, also known as CGI. CGI was extremely prevalent in the movie, but it did not take away from the scenery or purpose of the storyline.
In addition, each Marvel movie created is based on different storylines from the comics. So is this movie. However, one of the main characters in the “Eternal” comics , Ajak, is male, and in the film, Hayek plays Ajak. The ability to change important details like that but keep the integrity of the comic intact is another reason why the movie is brilliant.
Overall, although it could be argued that there have been better Marvel movies produced, “Eternals” did not shy away from living up to the Marvel name. There are many reasons why this movie was an amazing work of art. From the beautiful scenery chosen, using CGI to recreate important times in human history and epic fight scenes, to the flexibility between the comic and the film to the cast list, it is evident that each detail produced something wonderful and meticulously crafted. The precise vision that Zhao had made this film a great one.
