Tyler, the Creator won the Best Rap Album award at the 2022 Grammys for “Call Me If You Get Lost,” besting past winners J. Cole, Kayne West and Nas. This is also Tyler’s (real name Tyler Okonma) second win in the category. He won the award in 2020 for “Igor.”

As a Tyler, the Creator fan, I was not surprised that he won. With this album, Tyler accomplished one of the greatest three-album runs of all time. Not only did he put out three amazing albums while staying focused and reflective of his mental state and life experiences, each album was different from the other. He also creatively expressed himself in a way that was experimental and unique. Tyler has always been able to genuinely do whatever he wants while expanding the boundaries of hip-pop.

I remember the day I first listened to “Call Me If You Get Lost.” I woke up and saw the notification from Spotify announcing his album release. I listened to it as I got ready for the day. Maybe it was because I was getting ready, but it took a while for me to understand the true meaning behind this album. Don’t get me wrong一 I immediately liked the flow and vibe, but I wanted to take the time and understand the story that he creates with each album. With “Igor,” the audience follows a story of a love triangle between the titular character Igor and his male love interest. That being said, it took me a couple of listens to truly understand the lyrics and the storyTyler created for “Call Me If You Get Lost.”

Tyler told a beautiful and heart-wrenching story about unrequited love here, laying bare his true feelings and putting the whole album into perspective by revealing that all of his flexing, bragging and game-spitting were the product of him being hopelessly in love with another man’s woman. He is a homewrecker. Despite its focus on the themes of loss and romantic yearning, the album leaves you wanting to dance and sing along to the catchy lyrics and beautiful flow.

Overall, I think “Call Me If You Get Lost” is Tyler’s best album to date because he showcased his best production and boosted the listening experience with a stellar feature line-up too . He topped his previous album with a new one considering each one has a different aura and theme. The Grammy was well deserved. If you’re looking for something unique, “Call Me If You Get Lost” would be a great listening experience for you. Happy listening!
