The Rio Grande Valley lost Helgi Davis, the owner of comic bookstore Myth Adventures last month. Since his passing in June, his granddaughter, Kali Martinez, has taken over as owner.

Myth Adventures originally opened in the late 80s as a trading card store before Davis bought it in 1991.

According to Martinez, her grandfather bought the store to keep his comic collection there as it was taking up too much space at home.

She started working at Myth Adventures in her teen years as a summer job, during which she said she learned valuable lessons about life and business from her grandfather.

“We can use something for everything,” Martinez said. “I can look at any section and I can remember what he told me and what to do.”

Davis was known for his business acumen and encyclopedic knowledge of his store.

Norah Carden, sales associate and social media manager has been working at Myth for around a year.

Carden said she has been a loyal customer since she was young and remembers Davis and his passion for the store. She shared a memory of one time when she really wanted an exclusive comic, “Capes.”

“Every single year I would try to find that exact one for free comic book day,” Carden said.

She said she and her father went to Myth Adventures and when she asked for the comic, Davis went to the back of the store and quickly grabbed it out of a bin.

Half of the store is dedicated to back issue comics, ranging from big names such as Batman to much more niche characters such as Spawn.

According to Carden, “He had it just in the back of a box somewhere, and he knew where it was. That’s it. No computer system, so specific.”

In a post made on Instagram, Limited Editions Comic and Collectibles issued a statement giving appreciation to Davis and his reputation.

“Like the vikings of old from which he descended, Helgi Davis was a pioneer…one who was an inspiration to everyone around him.”

After his passing, love and support was shown toward his legacy and the store through social media.

Many customers shared their stories of interactions with Davis and his impact on the store’s Discord server.

Discord user “Unlucky Space-Man” referred to Davis as a “Helgi kind soul…he always listened and he gave thoughtful advice.”

Martinez said she shared the customers’ interactions with the rest of her family.

“That was really powerful for us…we were just amazed by how many people he reached,” she said.

Myth Adventures will continue to honor Davis and the legacy he left behind in the comic book community.

“The store is just every part of him,”Martinez said. “That’s just never (gonna) go away for me.”
