Vaqueros model to success

UTRGV’s Career Center hosted the Runway to Success: Success Ready fashion show Monday afternoon at PlainsCapital Bank El Gran Salón on the Brownsville campus to inform students about the university’s Career Closet. 

The fashion show featured two segments with business casual and business professional attire. 

Students and faculty walked the runway modeling slacks, suits, button-ups and cardigans all from the Career Closet. 

Selena Pequeno, UTRGV career advisor, said there’s two dress codes students will hear a lot when preparing for the workplace. 

Pequeno described business professionals as typically more formal while business casual is slightly more relaxed but still polished.

The clothes featured in the show are available at the UTRGV Career Closet to either rent for up to five days or to keep. 

Pequeno said there will be a career fair Feb. 26 on the Brownville campus and asked the panel of judges during the show what impact professional attire has on a student’s first impression. 

  “It takes seven seconds to make a first impression, that’s why we did this fashion show to give students an idea of what you should be wearing for interviews or career fairs,” Suzanne Gonzales, UTRGV career adviser. 

Jamie Villanueva said First impressions are lasting impressions and it’s important to dress accordingly.

The Career Closet is located on the third floor of the Student Academic Center on the Edinburg campus. 

Students can schedule appointments through Handshake, for Brownsville students the appointment will act as a consultation to review inventory and take measurements according to the UTRGV Career Center website. 

The Edinburg campus will have its Runway to Success: Success Ready fashion show on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. at the Student Union Theater.
