With spring break around the corner the University has taken initiative to promote a safe vacation for students.
On Tuesday at the Music and Science Learning Center Courtyard on the Brownsville campus UTRGV Students Rights and Responsibilities (SRR) hosted a Spring Break Lu’au to ensure students stay safe.
“We are trying to connect students with community partners outside of the university,” said Gloria Garcia, assistant director for SRR.

Community partners such as the University Police Department and Planned Parenthood provided tips and information for students.
Planned Parenthood gave away condoms and pregnancy tests for students.
To promote safe driving, University PD provided Tipsy Driving Carts to simulate what driving under the influence is like.

Vincent Taylor, biology freshman said he is staying safe this spring break by using protection.
Garcia said it’s important for students who are spending their spring break at South Padre Island to know how to float, save somebody or themselves if they are ever in an unsafe situation.
Representatives from South Padre Island were at the event as well to encourage safe swimming and environmental awareness.
Carmine Navarro, integrated health science freshman said he is staying safe by making sure he stays close to his friends if he attends parties.
“If they do party we want them to party safe and party smart,” Garcia said.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday SRR will host a Spring Break Lu’an at the Edinburg campus Ballroom.
