The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros won 61-13 on Saturday, against the Texas Wesleyan Rams during their fourth game celebrating Hispanic heritage. 

With this win, the Vaqueros continue their streak of being undefeated 4-0.

The Rams were the last National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) conference team the Vaqueros played before they start competing against other Southland Conference schools next week.

Head coach Travis Bush said despite the undefeated record, there is a lot the team can improve on leading up to its first conference game.

 “It’s going to be a physical battle,” Bush said. “we’re going to have to be ready to play our best every week.”

Defensive back Alijah Prosser said he was upset over the Rams scoring at Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium, the first team to do so.

“We always strive for perfection,” Prosser said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t get it tonight, but I still think we played hard and we have things to learn from.”

During the game, the crowd was electric as the theme was 956 night, with many showing Rio Grande Valley pride.

Running back Fabian Garcia said he is thankful for the fans who show up to the games and cheer.

According to Garcia, “We’re just proving that it is possible to play at a Division I level because two guys from the Valley at UTRGV are doing it.”

UTRGV Quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger said he  is proud to represent the Valley.

“Its the greatest place on earth,” Marburger said. “I recommend a lot of people come down here.”

The next game for the Vaqueros will be against the Southeastern University Lions at 6 p.m. Sept 27. At Strawberry Stadium in Hammond, Louisiana.
