The Vaqueros continue their nine time winning streak with a win of 3-1 tonight against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders.

Thursday’s win marks UTRGV’s longest consecutive wins since 2022 and adds to their overall record of 15-7 for the season.

The Islanders swept the showdown last year which put a stop on a winning streak that the Vaqueros had.

This is the Vaqueros first game of two in the South Texas Showdown against the Islanders, which is a yearly collegiate athletic competition that has been held between the two universities since 2000.

The game started with a two set lead from the Vaqueros before the Islanders were able to score a 6 point lead in the third set. The Vaqueros eventually came back in the fourth set and won the game.

Head coach Todd Lowery said the team was on fire tonight and that they are striving to get better every game.

“The ultimate goal is just one game at a time,” Lowery said. “I think the streak is just like another number.”

According to him, the message he wants to send to the team is to keep looking forward to the next match.

“All those nine are in the past,” he said. “Whether it’s a point or whether it’s a match or whatever it’s onto the next.”

Middle blocker Julianna Bryant said a lesson she has learned from being a part of the team is to remember to be grateful to be playing for the team and to always give 100% at every game and practice.

“I just trusted my team,” she said. “So, I’m grateful and I’m very happy on our girl’s performance today.”
