In preparation of UTRGV’s annual Dye Hard Orange Walk/Run, the University Recreation Center started Orange Out Walks Jan. 9 on the Edinburg and Brownsville campus.
Faculty and staff gathered at the Brownsville Student Union and the Edinburg Bronc Trail to walk around the campuses and wore Vaquero swag given by the UREC.
Orange Out Walks are a new event hosted by the UREC every Friday of January and consists of a small 10-minute walk around campus to get people moving and prepared for the Dye Hard Orange event.

“What better way to celebrate, you know, a run/walk with an actual walk on campus to celebrate obviously the 10-year anniversary but also to get kind of people moving a little bit,” said Gilberto Lopez, Brownsville program coordinator of the University Recreation Center.
Before the event, Brenda Luevanos, office assistant of Bilingual & Literacy Studies, said she expected to walk around and have a good talk with her coworker.
According to Lopez, the UREC decided to host this event with the expectations of getting people out of the office to start moving and exercising, but also as a way of reminding students that their “big event” Dye Hard Orange is happening soon.
Diana Amaro, Accountant I of College of Education & P16 Integration, said her expectations were met as she expected the event “to be peaceful and a relaxing time while walking around.”
Dye Hard Orange is an annual event the UREC has hosted for four years happening at 7:30 a.m. Feb. 7 at the UTRGV Harlingen Clinical Education Building.

According to the UREC’s website, this is an event where UTRGV pride and wellness is celebrated in an exciting color-filled 5K run/walk.
This year in celebration of UTRGV’s 10th anniversary, Dye Hard Orange will have a 10K timed run and a 1-mile walk/run for the first time.
“It’s a lot of fun. We invite obviously faculty, staff, students and the community,” Lopez said.
