EDINBURG, Texas- According to www.bbc.com, “The Met Gala is the fashion industry’s equivalent of the Oscars, and sees designers, models and Hollywood stars gather to compete for media coverage.” The Met is known for its extravagant and camp looks.

However, the Met Gala this year was a tragedy. Perhaps people were rusty because of quarantine? I found that the struggle was to remain on theme, which was, “In America: A lexicon of fashion.” Don’t get me wrong. The outfits were gorgeous. But were just off topic. Hailey Bieber, Kim Kardashian and, sadly, Rihanna are just a few examples of celebrities that completely missed the mark.

Nevertheless, a few people hit the mark. Here are my top three favorite looks from last Monday’s Met Gala.

The order of looks goes as follows:

3. Imaan Hammam in sheer Versace

This look came in at spot number three for two reasons. One of the most common themes at the Met Gala this year was a sheer look. We saw it on model Kendall Jenner and actress Zoey Deutch. What sets this gown apart?

It’s on theme! It looked as if Imaan Hammam was paying homage to the American flag, not simply wearing a sparkling gown to a daring fashion event.

2. Dan Levy in Leowe’s Jonathan Anderson and Cartier

This was one of my favorite looks, because it was daring, extravagant and screamed MET! The outfit is not only a whimsical mix of color and print but according to Leowe’s interview with Vanity Fair, it was a tribute to the “resilience and the love and the joy” of the LGBTQ+ community. This outfit was also on theme, and one of the few looks I felt followed the motif of lavish couture. It sent a meaningful message.

1. Iman in Dolce & Gabbana x Harris Reed

This look was my favorite because it was absolutely fabulous. Iman stole the show in this completely gold feathered look as her outfit paid homage to “ballroom culture in America’s golden age,” according to Harper’s Bazaar. Iman’s designer said the piece was “based on the idea of her being a queen, an icon, someone who is in a space of utter acceptance and really pushing these limits.” Once again, glamorous but serving a greater overall message. She did exactly what she needed to do, serving my favorite look at the 2021 Met Gala.

Overall, the Met Gala was not a complete trainwreck. Imaam Hammam, Dan Levy and Iman understood the assignment and hopefully paved the way for a better Met next year. I am hopeful that celebrities will take note of future themes and do better in 2022.
