The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley Men Soccer Team lost 0-1 in a match against the Houston Christian University Huskies in a game Wednesday night at home.

The Vaqueros played offensively in the first half, managing to keep the Huskies at bay, while also blocking their two shots and providing two shots of their own. Both teams were not able to get an edge over the other with the score remaining 0-0 the first half.

In the second half, the Vaqueros went on the attack, with multiple aggressive moves from forward Sora Noda effortlessly dribbling around a Husky on the edge of the field and getting the ball away, and defender Ezekiel Oswald, keeping the team on the offense.

Husky forward Ryan Okerayi led the aggressive charge to a penalty kick goal at the 87 – minute mark, securing the game for HCU and another loss for UTRGV.

UTRGV head coach Bryheem Hancock said even with the downturn in the overall score for the team, he is still confident in his athletes’ performance.

In his eyes, the team was able to get into a good defensive rhythm 20 minutes into the first half  and were able to hold their ground until the last few moments of the game when the Huskies scored, Hancock said

“[The team] improved over time, the stats are showing that every single time,” the coach said.

The Vaqueros have struggled so far this season, with an overall record of 0-5.

The men’s soccer team has been playing independently without a conference since leaving the Western Athletic Conference last year. The team is scheduled to join the Ohio Valley Conference in the 2026 season.

Looking ahead, the Vaqueros have Senior Day, which is the last regular season game on their home turf, which Hancock said that his athletes deserve an opportunity to come out with a win.

“For me, it’s just about getting three points for the guys that have put in a lot of work for this program,” he said.

The Senior Day game against Lindenwood University is at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex, located at 175-299 N 4th Ave, Edinburg, TX 78541.
