Brownsville hosts Vaqueros football scrimmage

The UTRGV Vaqueros played their second-ever spring game today at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville with a score of 14-7. 

Within seconds of the starting whistle white team player Fabian Garcia RB R-Fr scored the first touchdown. Brysen Gardner K R-So scored the extra point. 

The Vaqueros remained with the same score throughout the second and third quarter.

During a third quarter play, an orange team player Tate Davis OL R-Fr appeared to have suffered an injury and was taken by EMS for further medical evaluation. As of time of publication no further comment has been made.

Brennan Carroll RB R-Fr scored the second touchdown during the fourth quarter.  Gardner scored the extra point. 

Orange team player Braden Baize WR R-So scored the team’s first touchdown with 1:03 left on the clock. 

The Vaqueros played a competitive game and players said they enjoyed being on the field.

 “Really fun day,” Jaxson Maynard LB R-Fr said. “Great competition, glad white team came up on top.”

For some Vaqueros, today’s game was not their first time playing at Sams Memorial Stadium.

Nathan Huerta DL R-Jr said he played in Sams Stadium twice in high school.

“I haven’t been there in a while, but it’s going to feel good going back,” Huerta said. 

  The 2,831 attendees filled the stadium with Vaquero spirit and high emotions.

“I’m not surprised by the crowd, I’m from down here. I expected this stuff,” Garcia said.

Stephanie Roliz, a UTRGV mass communication freshman, said she attended all the home UTRGV football games last season and was excited to see them in her hometown. 

“I also wanted to bring my dad to his first college football game, it’s also like his little treat that he gets to experience this too,” Roliz said. 

The Fall 2026 season will begin on Saturday, Aug. 29 with a home game against UT Permian Basin.
