Hear ye, hear ye! Vaqueros donned the attire of the Renaissance era to attend the “Knight Out Renaissance Fair” Tuesday at the UTRGV chapel lawn on the Edinburg campus.

The event hosted by the UTRGV Campus Activities Board had earth tones, silver headpieces and flowy gowns seen throughout the event, making fairytales come to life.

One fairytale was played out by Madison Wilde, a philosophy sophomore, who said she was inspired by a pirate who kidnaps fairies. Wilde was dressed in a white top and red skirt with her belt hanging her potions for her fairy prey.

To help capture these fairies, Kory Bazarte, a cyber security junior, said he was a high elf who works for the pirate to lure in fairies. Bazarte wore a green flowy dress with a brown corset and earrings appearing to be captured fairies.

Wilde and Bazarte designed their costumes by foraging through their closets and second-hand stores.

As one fairytale ends, another begins with Adolfo Garza, psychology senior, who dressed as a knight in shining armor and said he enjoys the aesthetics of medieval times and was quite surprised by the turnout of the event.

Garza said he acquired his knight outfit from various websites and second-hand stores.

“Most people do like the aesthetics of the Vaquero and boots, you know but there’s people who like this more so I think it adds a lot of creativity to campus,” Garza said.

The event had multiple opportunities for Vaqueros to explore their own fairytale by designing shields, princess hats as well as the chance to be in a sword tournament as well as the costume contest.

Erin Ferrell, student activities program coordinator, said “After seeing how much uptake it is we’re hoping to have the event again next year but make it bigger and better.”
